Biotic patterns in physical, biological and economic processes
identify Bipolar Feedback as a generic mechanism for creating complexity

Bios is a chaotic pattern (aperiodic, causally generated) characterized by features of creativity such as novelty and temporal complexity (Sabelli and Abouzeid, 2003) that are measurable in time series. Thus Bios is empirically distinguished from chaotic attractors and from random walks.
Ongoing studies demonstrate Bios in the prime numbers (Sabelli, 2007; Kauffman. and Sabelli, 2007), quantum processes (Sabelli and Kovacevic, 2003;Thomas et al, 2006), the distribution of galaxies and quasars (Sabelli and Kovacevic, 2003, 2006; Sabelli et al., in press), gravitational waves (Sabelli and Lawandow, submitted for publication), DNA (Sabelli, 2005), population numbers of animal species (Sabelli and Kovacevic, 2006, 2008), heartbeat and respiration intervals (Sabelli et al., 1997; Sabelli, 2005), economic (financial, employment) processes (Patel and Sabelli. 2003; Sabelli, 2005), texts (Sabelli, 2005) and music (Levy et al, 2006).
Bios is generated mathematically by recursions of bipolar feedback (i.e. positive and negative feedback) such as the process equation (Kauffman and Sabelli, 1998) and the diversifying equation (At+1 = At + sin (At * j), but not by recursions that involve random change or unipolar feedback (logistic equation, purportedly describing animal populations in a Malthusian fashion).
These results contradict the widely accepted view that creative processes are either supernatural or random, and that complexity arises from selection in a Darwinian fashion. Instead, they indicate that evolution is a causal and creative process, and suggest that bipolar feedback is a generic mechanism for the creation of complexity.
While the (empirically unsupported) Malthusian speculations give credence to competition and aggression, the notion of creative and causal processes supports creative human action.
