Biotic Pattern of Prime Numbers Supports the Bios Theory of Creative Evolution

Mathematical analyses reveal life-like (biotic) creativity and harmonic features in the prime number series. Bios is a pattern characterized by causal novelty (measurable as reduction in recurrence by randomization).

Dear Friends,

Hector collapsed last night while walking to the Lyric Opera after parking the car. I was contacted at intermission by a security guard. They tracked me down after finding his theater ticket. He was not breathing and had a complex heart arrhythmia when the medics came. It is not known how long he went without breathing. They had to cardio vert him. While his heart returned to a sustaining rhythm, he did not become responsive. In the emergency department at North Western Memorial Hospital they cooled his body down to minimize the neurological damage and sedated him to keep him from moving. During the night, and throughout the day today, medications were needed to bring his blood pressure up and speed his heart rate.

Hector continues to have periods where his blood pressure drops very low, and his pulse is around 40 bpm. He is of courses not responsive because of the sedation. A heart catheterization this morning indicated that all the arteries of the Hector's heart are open. There is no blockage. So Hector's collapse on the street was not caused by a myocardial infarction but by a primary arrhythmia or a neurological event. We probably will never know whether he collapsed first or had a fall that triggered an arrhythmia... or what exactly happened. Since it is not known how long he went without breathing and he did not become responsive before they cooled him down and sedated him, and the cause of the arrhythmia is uncertain the crucial problem at this point is brain function. Monday morning they will do an EEG and a brain scan.

Raphael, Hector's younger son has been with him since about 9:00 am this morning and the older son, Martin, is arriving about 7:00 tonight. I have been in close contact with my Mom and all of my sisters by both email and phone. I am as well as can be expected given what has happened.

Biotic features of novelty, causation, diversification, non-random complexity, and episodic patterning are observed (after detrending) in the series of prime numbers, the differences between consecutive primes, and the distribution of primes. Plots of the sine versus cosine transforms of the primes show circular symmetry as in electromagnetic radiation, which is also demonstrable in heartbeats and in the Schrödinger equation. Recursions of sinusoidal functions generate bios. Bios has been demonstrated in quantum, cosmological, meteorological, cardiac, population, and economic series. These results support the Bios Hypothesis that natural and human processes and their evolution are causal creative processes, largely driven by cyclic engines homologous to electromagnetic radiation which are capable of generating diversity, novelty and complexity.

First I must say, that despite having enjoyed conversations with Hector, from Berkeley to his sumptuous living room overlooking the lake in Chicago, I doubt that Hector exists. He is more like a Bourbaki, a collective, and a very productive one at that. It shows the value of continual face-to-face interaction between its various members, each with important and considerable skills. I shall continue to call this collective “Hector” here.

Saturday I was just hunkering down during our mini-blizzard after my cross-country skiing, to get to Hector’s papers for comment and for my preparation of the Winter ChaoConference, when an email appeared from The Open Cybernetics and Systemics Journal requesting a review of an invited paper by Hector. So I switched from the Biotic Pattern article we have for homework to the new paper. They cover pretty much the same territory. The article for review is essentially a highly condensed introduction to his book—BIOS: A Study of Creation.(Sabelli et al., 2005) The Biotic Pattern paper we have on Blueberry-Brain.org is essentially an even more condensed version, pretty much restricted to analyzing the sequence of prime numbers as an illustration. It is helpful to have the book on hand to elucidate some of the things that, as Hector points out in the article, are pretty dense otherwise.
